Nestled along the scenic US-18 corridor in Jefferson, WI, Wayside Inn offers a classic American dining experience that feels like a beloved neighborhood treasure. Specializing as both an American restaurant and cocktail bar, this cozy supper club perfectly marries hearty comfort food with a warm, inviting atmosphere that keeps locals and travelers coming back for more.
The menu at Wayside Inn is a celebration of traditional American favorites with an emphasis on fresh, satisfying dishes that leave a lasting impression. Seafood lovers will be drawn to their renowned fish fry selections, featuring generous portions of deep-fried cod, lake perch, catfish, and even bluegill — all served with fresh-baked bread, tangy coleslaw, and a soothing homemade soup or crisp dinner salad. One standout recommendation is the blackened fish served with hand-breaded shrimp on the side, a deliciously crispy and flavorful combination that tantalizes the palate.
For those who crave robust, savory steaks, the beef and pork offerings are equally impressive. From the tender New York Strip and Ribeye to the juicy BBQ pork ribs and king-cut prime rib, each dish is expertly prepared and served with a choice of classic sides like baked potato, crispy steak fries, or golden potato wedges. The prime rib, in particular, is celebrated by regulars, offering substantial cuts that are tender, flavorful, and accompanied by a full relish tray — a true supper club tradition.
Complementing the hearty fare is the lively bar scene. Wayside Inn’s cocktail menu features beloved classics such as Bloody Marys and Brandy Alexanders, perfectly crafted to unwind with while catching a Packers game or enjoying a night out. Guests consistently praise the welcoming and spirited service from both bartenders and waitstaff, whose good humor and attentiveness add a personal touch that makes dining here feel effortless and enjoyable.
Stepping inside Wayside Inn, you immediately sense the charm of a traditional supper club — casual, comfortable, with a hint of nostalgic Wisconsin hospitality. Whether you’re settling in for a weekend prime rib feast, indulging in an all-you-can-eat Friday fish fry, or just stopping by for a perfectly mixed drink, the atmosphere here keeps things relaxed yet special.
Do note, the establishment operates on a cash-only policy, which is a small nod to authentic supper club culture. A minor quibble for many, as the overall value, quality, and friendly vibe more than make up for it. From the moment you’re greeted at the bar, through the rich aromas of fresh-baked bread and sizzling fish, to the satisfying last bites of a top-shelf steak, Wayside Inn leaves you feeling genuinely cared for and delightfully full.
Whether you’re seeking a memorable dinner spot between Madison and Milwaukee, or a hidden gem where the food is always hot and the service genuine, Wayside Inn sits comfortably as a rare supper club jewel — one you’ll want to tell your friends about and revisit again and again.
My favorite little supper club in southern Wisconsin! The picture below shows the super cut prime rib which you can get for $24.50 on Saturday nights. King cut is $19.00. You get the whole relish tray and warm bread with each dinner, as well as soup or salad. I very much enjoy their fish options - try it blackened, and you can add a few hand breaded, nice size shrimp on the side for $5. The service is always friendly, so join them for a tasty and affordable dinner. BRING CASH - no cards.
We decided on the Wayside because it was about halfway between Madison and Milwaukee to meet our friends. What a find! It’s the supper club that are getting to be so rare in this time of chain restaurants. The moment we walked in the bartender greeted us right away. Our waitress was a spitfire. She took my husband’s ‘sense of humor’ in stride and gave it right back to him. He met his match in a 17 year old. The food was amazing! Our friends and hubby had prime rib that they loved and I had the tenderloin. I know tenderloins are supposed to be tender but this was fall apart tender and the flavor was so good. The prices are very reasonable and the menu has options for everyone. We will be back for sure. Thank you for such an enjoyable experience.
OMG! Food is always HOT delicious and fast! People are so nice and prices are very reasonable. A/C doesn’t seem to be working or sufficient
We went to try somewhere new. The menu in the online pictures is not updated... prices were a few dollars higher, but very reasonable.... service was very welcoming, and continued throughout our entire time there. (Bartender, waitress, etc.) If going there to eat, let the bartender know and they will take care of it. We drank to mixed drinks, both were excellent and great price. For a place I drove by many times and didnt consider stopping, that was my mistake. I will be there again, extremely happy we went, you will be too.
Was in the area and found this place on a search for a good fish fry. It definitely lived up to the hype. The fish fry was excellent. Big firm pieces of fish, a few choices of potato ( including potato pancakes) warm fresh baked bread and tasty coleslaw. Everything about the meal was delicious. Fast service good prices. * No credit or debit cards* Nice little bar to hang out in while you wait for your table. Old fashioned was pretty good. If I'm ever in the area I'll definitely be back.
Everything you could ask for in a classic rural Wisconsin super club! Nothing fancy, paneled walls, friendly service with great food at a wonderful price! The bartender and fellow patrons were a delight!
